One day during summer 2020, I looked out my bedroom window to the garden below to see my parents tending the tattie patch. By nature, we Massies are not a green-fingered bunch, but the tattie patch and polytunnel thrived that summer under constant attention. Well, there were lots of leaves, at least: the salad was stunning and the courgettes were crackin’! The tatties, however, were teenie and the parsnips were paltry. But what pride we took in them all! Watching mum and dad working the land together put me in mind of the brave pioneers who took to the western frontier of America in the times of the land races… but with iPhones and air fryers.
